Walking up to Mickey’s Diner in the heart of St. Paul, we were expecting a line out the door. We pictured die-hard Mighty Ducks fans clamoring for the same stool Gordon Bombay broke the news he was walking away from the Ducks. The same location that Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sinbad bond in their family-friendly, outrageous pursuit of a Turbo Man action figure. However, in true St. Paul spirit, it was… well, pretty quiet.
Having been open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year for nearly 70 years – its operation runs like a well-oiled machine. The service is quick, so be prepared to get in and get out, on-site parking is 30-minutes for a good reason. The food was as expected, greasy, filling and insanely-delicious.
While the reporter was really into the high and fluffy omelets… Strong coffee, butter-soaked pancakes, and milkshakes as thick as oatmeal cured our lingering feelings from the night before. While we may have expected a “Gordon Bombay sat here” sign or two, there was no bragging, no bravado to this place. It’s Mickey’s of St. Paul, get in, eat up and have a nice day.
